The Spirit of the Woodpecker

When spirit comes knocking….please open the door.

This past weekend was one of great significance to me. While on my journey these last several weeks, I’ve found a lot of enjoyment in being alone. However, I had an opportunity to see a band on Friday evening whom I usually see when they’re in Springfield. This time, before leaping at the chance to go out and be entertained, I felt into my body and asked my body what it wanted to do. For some…this may sound super weird and that’s okay. Hang around a little longer and you’ll find out I get weirder. LOL

Anyway, this time…I listened and I stayed home, playing with my cacao beans, roasting them after they’d fermented for five days. And, being a complete amateur chocolate maker, it took me probably 10 times as long to accomplish the task – but, mind you…I did. 🙂

Fast forward to, we’ll say 5:17am, I begin to stir from my slumber quite aware of my bladder. As I opened my bedroom door and began to find my way to the bathroom, I noticed something in front of my feet that I could have very easily mistaken for a sock, given the washer and dryer are nearby. However, something whispered in my ear — this is the best way I can describe my clairvoyance, just a knowing, but I like to visualize spirit whispering in my ear.

Turn on the light, don’t step on it.

After fumbling for a light switch, I see the most beautiful bird we have here in the Ozarks, a female Northern Flicker Woodpecker, which ironically, was the exact type of bird I’d videotaped pecking and singing across the street almost exactly seven days prior, Sunday evening at 5:17. Clearly, it was more than likely Jasper, our gray cat, who brought this beautiful creature inside and possibly took its life, however, her body was fully in tact and so beautiful. You can watch my Instagram reel here.

Now having been making it a point to operate from a place of awareness VERY INTENTIONALLY since January, I chose to research what the spirit of the woodpecker has to say and of course, the message of this beautiful creature was exactly what I needed to hear from my guides.

Be bold. Stand out.

Don’t worry about conformity or what others think. Embrace the rhythm of life and my gravitation toward shamanism and all that our sacred mother earth has to teach us. Lean in on the plants and their medicine to stay present and aware. Find peace within my divine feminine wisdom and be attentive to my inner child’s needs. Remembering to commune with my body daily, allowing sacred sexual energy to open my awareness of self and my connection to everything around me, honoring and cultivating my relationship with me.

What her spirit reminded me of was my deep connection to nature, especially animals, that began when I was very little. I remember playing in the vast wooded area behind our home, making mud pies, cutting up ingredients that consisted of grass, flowers and sometimes animal droppings. I was always a curious little girl with lots of unsupervised time on her hands being wild and free. Mama Cacao has reintroduced me to that little girl and woodpecker spirit has flown in to sit on my shoulder nudging me to remember.

You’re so woo-woo now. LOL

Never have a felt so connected and on my path as I do as I type this, realizing this medicine isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. However, for those who are ready to journey with me into a deeper level of consciousness, communing with your bodies, asking the questions to raise your awareness and vibration….let’s share space. I have several upcoming cacao ceremonies scheduled this year as well as some pop-up one’s taking place on my property, outdoors. I’m also available for private one-on-one and group ceremonies. Just ask for details.

Preservation of Her Spirit

Under the guidance of a colleague, ceremony facilitator, healer and native Colorado medicine woman, I performed a private ceremony with the woodpecker’s physical body, invoking her spirit to guide me and all my ceremonies, to bring clarity to my tongue when I communicate, to keep rhythm in my heart, to fill me with courage to stand out, empower me to trust my intuition and share the messages being whispered in my ear.

Her wings and tail feathers adorn my altar as they cure and she will flutter and rap with me in ceremony, blessing each of you, encouraging you to be you….the all powerful you.
